Drum, Dance & Culture
In Mandinka, An Ka Fo means “let’s play”. Let’s Play, referring to the art of music.
Established in 2009, The Atlanta-based An Ka Fo Drum & Dance Ensemble performs heart-pounding authentic, traditional and ancient African dance, music, and folklore as well as creative works. A colorful and powerful African dance and drum company, An Ka Fo lifts its audiences to their feet with its detailed synthesis of dance, rhythm and song.
We tirelessly research the cultural and historical significance of the dances and the societies from which they originate. As a result, An Ka Fo is more than just a performance Ensemble. In addition, we are an ensemble of instructors and students: an important element to the perpetuation of our art form and its accurate distribution to our audiences. Our ensemble includes professional performances both in the U.S and abroad. We offer comprehensive community arts programs, classes for the public and as well as university enrichment.
“Let’s Play” refers to the art of music and dance which are the universal languages of mankind. Music brings about peace and has healing elements that soothe the soul. It is the most powerful conduit for transmitting concepts and ideals. Dance is a form of nonverbal communication between humans. It embodies and expresses ideas, emotions and can tell stories. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music and dance vary according to culture. Music and dance are infused in the cultural foundation of An Ka Fo.
An Ka Fo appreciates the merit in all cultures. Our minute differences amplify the beauty in every culture!
